Ashley Atkinson is a planner with an economic development focus and more than a decade of experience in Los Angeles-area municipal agencies. As Planning Performance Manager in the Los Angeles Department of City Planning, she is working to develop metrics for planning, incorporate them into the Department’s functions, and recommend strategic enhancements based on metrics analysis. Previously, as Mayor Eric Garcetti's Senior Planning & Development Manager during his administration's first term, Ashley worked with the departments of City Planning and Building & Safety to implement mayoral directives and achieve priority outcomes on land use, development, and housing issues. She joined the Mayor’s Office in 2013 from the City of Long Beach, where she managed redevelopment projects and budgets. She holds a dual master’s degree in Public Administration and Urban Planning from USC’s Price School of Public Policy, and is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the American Institute of Certified Planners. She is serving as director of the American Planning Association's Los Angeles section for 2016-2019.

Fern Nueno is a Project Manager for the City of Long Beach Economic Development Department. Prior to working for Economic Development, Fern worked for the City's Development Services Department focusing on long-range planning projects, including the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan, Land Use Element, and public realm projects.  Fern was previously employed with the City of Newport Beach where she worked on a variety of planning and development review projects, including the Balboa Village Master Plan. Fern’s professional interests include sustainability, placemaking, geographic information systems, and livability. Fern is an AICP Certified Planner and LEED Accredited Professional. Fern holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Master of Business Administration from Louisiana State University Shreveport.

Karolina is a certified planner working in the Urban Design Studio within the Los Angeles Department of City Planning. She holds a Master’s in Urban Planning from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from UCLA. Karolina has previous experience in a variety of planning functions, including a regional planner for L.A. County, where she worked on long-range community planning, a planning consultant within the private sector, and a lecturer at UCLA. While at UCLA, Karolina researched socioeconomic impacts of planning interventions, such as TODs or historic districts, on neighborhood change, and gentrification in Los Angeles.

Bonnie is an environmental planner at HUD in the Los Angeles office, where her work focuses on ensuring that housing and community development projects comply with environmental regulations and incorporate green elements. A Californian with a New York soul, Bonnie previously worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where she researched measures to improve the New York metropolitan area’s air quality.  She was also a sustainability planner in the San Francisco area, where she developed energy and water conservation initiatives and green infrastructure plans.  She is a LEED Accredited Professional as well as a Certified Planner.  She possesses a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, where her research explored nitrogen cycling in California's estuaries.  Bonnie's interest in the natural world began when she was five and her mom took her to see the grunion run along the beach in San Pedro. Today, it remains one of the most magical events she has ever witnessed.

Catherine has more than a decade of municipal planning experience serving the cities of Yorba Linda, Fontana, Pomona, and Redlands where she is currently the Principal Planner. Prior to joining the public sector, she also did private consulting for two years. She has worked on a wide range of current planning and advanced planning projects. Catherine was the APA Los Angeles Section Student Representative from UCLA in 2002-2004. She received her masters degree in Urban Planning from UCLA, and two bachelor degrees from UC Irvine in Environmental Analysis and Design and Studio Art.

Ashley Hefner is the Advance Planning Manager for the City of Culver City Community Development Department. Before working for Culver City, Ashley worked for the Cities of Pasadena and Anaheim as a contract planner and worked in the Monterey Peninsula for 10 years prior. Besides managing Culver City’s General Plan Update, she co-manages the Ballona Creek Revitalization Project and the City’s first travel demand forecast model. Her 12 years of experience in the public and private sectors in advance planning, current planning, environmental analysis, urban design, and historic preservation has enabled her to be a planning generalist. She holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, is a member of the Congress for New Urbanism and the American Institute of Certified Planners, and serves the American Planning Association Los Angeles Section as Vice-Director for Public Information for 2017-2018.

Darnell Parker II is a strong professional with a Master of Urban and Regional planning, focused in urban affairs and planning. In addition, he holds a Master and Bachelor degree in Architecture, focused in urban design. All, degrees were obtained from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is an Experienced Specialist with demonstrated history (more than 3 years) of professional work experience in the realm of architecture and 1 year of community planning. As a practicing professional in architecture, he has assisted firms who focus on achieving energy reduction by incorporating energy efficient principles throughout their design. Darnell is a Return United States Peace Corps Volunteer from the Republic of Moldova, where he independently worked side-by-side with the Mayor and his appointed staff, to achieve strategic planned outcomes for community development. He recently moved from Virginia in 2016, where he prior to finishing school, worked as an Architectural Intern/Americorps Volunteer at Community Housing Partners. He assisted their design studio that focused on achieving sustainable design for affordable housing. He is a member of American Planning Association and American Institute of Architects. He is serving as the director and chairman of membership of the APA Los Angeles Section for 2017-2018.

Courtney Knapp, Ph.D., AICP is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she teaches community planning studios and courses on housing policy, community development, and planning and urban design in China. She previously worked in Massachusetts and New York as a housing, economic development, and public space planner.  Her recently published book, Constructing the Dynamo of Dixie: Race, Urban Planning, and Urban Cosmopolitanism in Chattanooga, Tennessee (University of North Carolina Press 2018), examines the racialized politics of placemaking and urban development over the course of the city's three century history.  Courtney is currently involved with new research projects focused on planner-librarian collaborations, the relationship between urban planning and ex-offender reentry and integration, and a history of planning "taboos" in Los Angeles. She has a B.A. in Philosophy and M.A. in Gender/ Cultural Studies from Simmons College, a M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning from Tufts University, and a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University.
