Planners’ Hike to Historic Sturtevant Camp
February 28, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Adams’ Pack Station
Join APA Los Angeles for a hike into history as we travel the way they did 100 years ago from Adam’s Pack Station to Sturtevant Camp! Located at Chantry Flat in Big Santa Anita Canyon above Arcadia, Adam’s Pack Station supplies weekend hikers and uses mules to pack in goods to campers and residents of isolated cabins. Sturtevant Camp was established in 1891, and was one of five resort camps in the Chantry Flat area during the great hiking era of the early 1900s. Today, it is the last remaining camp and remains accessible only by foot or by mule.
Deb Burgess of Friends of the San Gabriels will meet us at the camp to speak to the group about their vision for the future. The Friends are currently fundraising $75,000 to buy Sturtevant Camp by March 2, so this hike is especially timely.
The hike is a moderate 8-mile round trip walk along a well-marked trail. Please dress according to the weather and bring plenty of water. Bring your own lunch or buy snacks at Adam’s Pack Station store.
Parking is available in the lots at Chantry Flat and along the road with an Adventure Pass ($5 at Adam’s Pack Station), or in the private lot at Adam’s Pack Station for $10
This is a FREE event.
