How will the planning and design professions simultaneously cultivate pandemic-resilient parks and streets and break down the barriers of systemic racism? What does equitable access to open space look like right now, and in what ways does our profession need to adapt to make public spaces more accessible and just from a social, economic, racial, and ethnic perspective? Join us for a candid conversation among local planners, designers and advocates as they tackle these issues and share their recent experiences.

Presenters:

  • Lilly O’Brien-Kovari, Director of Strategic Initiatives | External Affairs, LADOT
  • Alina Bokde, Deputy Director of LA County Parks, Planning & Development
  • Helen Chin, Assistant to the City Manager on Homelessness, City of Culver City
  • Alexandra Ramirez, Program Manager, LA-Más

We’ll discuss:

  • What has been the impact of the open streets program and is it a long term option for open space equity and access in LA?
  • Despite COVID restrictions, parks and plazas as public assembly spaces has continued. How can parks enable this movement and uprising?
  • How has COVID impacted how unhoused individuals use open space, and what can we learn from that?
  • How do people see park spaces being used in the future; do parks need to change given what we are learning in this COVID/social uprising era?
