Job Description

The City of El Monte is the hub of the San Gabriel Valley, located approximately 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, where two major freeways—Interstate 10 and 605 intersect. El Monte’s slogan is “Welcome to Friendly El Monte” and historically known as the “The End of the Santa Fe Trail.”

The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented community and economic development professional and have the ability to foster a culture of professionalism and customer service. The Community and Economic Development Director will exemplify a strong sense of personal and professional ethics, integrity, and humanity. Candidates should possess extensive knowledge of local government community and economic development, local government practices, housing, code enforcement, animal control, building and safety, and management activities.

Salary range up to $158,196.00; supplemented by a competitive benefits package.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledgeable and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

EDUCATION: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in economics, planning, public administration, or a closely related field is required. A master’s degree in a related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of management/administrative government experience in urban economic development, planning; or related background, with a minimum of three (3) or more years of supervisory experience.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION: Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid driver’s license, Class C.
