Job Description
The Department of City Planning seeks a student professional worker (SPW) to assist Planning staff working on Community Plan updates in the long-range policy division. This paid opportunity will offer an enriching experience for current students and recent undergrad/graduate students wishing to gain hands-on practice in land use planning.
Tasks may include:
- Policy development and policy writing
- Research and analysis on specific issues related to public inquiries
- Community meeting preparation, participation and outreach
- Graphic design and visual communications
- Map creation and analysis
- Various general support duties
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Requirements:
- Experience or education in the following or related fields: Urban Planning, Transportation / Land Use Planning, Community Engagement, Architecture, Geography
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Experience and knowledge of ArcGIS, graphic design
- Available a minimum of 20 hrs/week for the next six to 12 months.
- Strong visual, oral, and written communication skills
Additional desired skills include:
- Social media and website development experience
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or SketchUp
- Bilingual in conversational English/Spanish
- Familiarity with LAMC (Los Angeles Municipal Code), long range policy plans, Specific Plans, CEQA
Ideal candidates are familiar with the City of Los Angeles, enjoy problem-solving, and are highly motivated and detail-oriented.
