Job Description
The Office of Councilmember Joe Buscaino is looking for a planner that has the ability to hit the ground running and join the LA City Hall policy team as our Planning Deputy.
We are looking for a staffer to join our planning and economic development team. The strongest candidates will have: an interest in economic development, civic engagement and urban planning; a familiarity with planning and entitlement processes; excellent organizational, communication and community-relations skills; the experience and sensitivity needed to work effectively with multiple-publics; and an ability to work well as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment.
The Planning Deputy’s main duties include, but are not limited to:
– Working closely with staff at the Departments of City Planning, Public Works, Building and Safety, and other departments as needed to achieve positive land use outcomes in the district.
– Understanding the relevant planning rules and regulations, including the various specific plans that apply to the district.
– Attending and speaking at planning hearings and community meetings, including those that occur on nights and weekends.
– Drafting briefing papers, motions, letters and other planning related documents.
– Responding to constituents and maintaining timely communication with community stakeholders.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Desired qualifications include:
- a degree in urban planning, public policy or public administration;
- one or more years of experience working with a city or county in current planning, entitlement processing, or policy planning. Strong experience as an intern in a municipal planning department will be considered;
- have experience and/or an interest in community development and housing;
- have excellent writing and communication skills;
- be self-directed and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines;
- an understanding of and experience with CEQA is desirable.
