Become a more media aware and social justice-minded planner!

As a society we consume racist media stereotypes everyday. These media messages reinforce poor self-image and self-awareness, and fuel the building blocks of racism, perception of “others”, racial profiling and discrimination. With today’s saturation of media, our ideologies, work policies and practices unconsciously support the institution of racism. For urban planners and policymakers, this translates into practices and outcomes that do not foster just, equitable or livable outcomes for the constituents we serve.

To build personal and professional anti-racist ideologies, lifestyles and belief systems, we must embrace professional development spaces that challenge our lenses, disrupt unconscious ways of thinking, practice analyzing media, provide cultural education and awaken our innate, collective humanity.

This workshop will do just that!

Using the framework of Afro-Media Literacy (AML) as an introduction to begin unpacking racism in a way that is contemporary and relevant to all, Rise Above the Noise will allow participants to:

  • Engage in peer-to-peer reflection on the influence of media
  • Learn more about cultural diversity
  • Discover tools to more challenge biases, implicit and otherwise

Speaker/Facilitator: Dr. Shani Byard, Founder, Scholar & Educational Consultant, Message Media Education who has led Afro-Media Literacy trainings nationwide and in Los Angeles for the Los Angeles Sherriff’s Department, City of Compton, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Public Interest Law Center.

Sponsored by the USC Associated Students of Planning and Development and Urban Rising Group, in collaboration with APA Los Angeles Section Young & Emerging Planners Group.

Parking/Transit Information: Parking is available on-campus for $12. Nearest parking structure is Parking Structure X on Figueroa and McCarthy Way. Participants are encouraged to take public transportation using the Metro Expo Line.
