On June 28, 1969, a spontaneous uprising began at the Stonewall Inn in New York City after police raided the bar, a common form of harassment toward LGBTQ+ people at the time. That night, members of the LGBTQ+ community, led by trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, fought back. The protests lasted several days and marked a turning point in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. First Sunday in June – West Hollywood Pride Parade – The first Pride march was held on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the uprising’s one-year anniversary.

As we celebrate this vibrant time of year, let us take a moment to recognize the significance of diversity and inclusion in urban planning, values that are at the heart of APA Los Angeles’ core mission.

Join us for a special Pride Month edition of the Rainbow Road Walking Tour in West Hollywood, co-hosted by APA Los Angeles and Pink Rhino Travel. This immersive two-hour experience highlights the intersection of urban planning, LGBTQ+ history, and civil rights in West Hollywood. Through stories of queer resistance, landmark preservation, and community design, we will explore how the city has evolved into a beacon of inclusivity. The tour blends historical insights with cultural storytelling and celebrates the impact of LGBTQ+ urban contributions, making it a meaningful experience for both planners and the broader public.
