APA Los Angeles Presents: New Sustainability Initiatives Tour at Santa Monica College

As a lead up to the awards excitement, please join APA Los Angeles for a talk and on-site tour of SMC’s Sustainability initiatives led by SMC’s Sustainability Project Manager Ferris Kawar.
SMC is known for its innovative environmental programs and is a leader in campus sustainability in the California Community College system. We will meet in front of the SMC’s Center for Environmental & Urban Studies (CEUS), is a resource center and gathering place. Come see the Organic Learning Garden, hear about the free farmers market which gleans leftover produce from local farmers market to feed students in need, and learn about SMC’s Sustainable Transportation incentive program, which rewards employees who bike, walk, carpool, or bus to SMC on a regular basis with a monthly incentive ranging from $15 to $30. The SMC campus features a new PE facility, the Core Performance Center (CPC) which was awarded LEED Platinum certification. The CPC is just one of 4 buildings in Santa Monica to earn this category distinction. SMC also has a campus recycling and composting operation that includes a vermicompost system.

Presenter: Ferris Kawar is the Sustainability Project Manager at Santa Monica College and a LEED AP. He has been the Recycling Specialist for the City of Burbank., co-founder of Greenopia, a consumer-friendly directory designed to help individuals easily locate local eco-friendly alternatives to the products and services they use every day, and the Residential Program Coordinator for Sustainable Works, a non-profit environmental education organization that was tasked with promoting sustainability to residents and businesses in Santa Monica. Ferris holds a degree in Marketing. Ferris sits on the board of advisors for Sustainable Works, is a member of Green Business Networking’s steering committee and previously sat on the Burbank Green Alliance steering committee.

Transit: Attendees are encouraged to take public transportation or carpool. For public transit: Take the Metro Expo line to Bergamot Station then walk or take the #16 bus from Olympic and 26th to the 20th street and walk to 18th and Pearl.
