When Everything Breaks: A Special December (Food & Giving) Edition

Cost: Free

The holidays look different for everyone this year, but we can still keep the spirit of the holiday season alive by focusing on food, community, and giving. For this special edition of When Everything Breaks, join APA Los Angeles and a panel of food industry experts, community leaders, and activists working to make sure everyone has food on their plates.

The COVID-19 pandemic has massively disrupted the food world, bringing uncertainty, operational hurdles, and economic challenges to an industry that is the lifeblood of Los Angeles. The pandemic has also hit individuals working in the food industry particularly hard, while others who don’t work in the food industry are also struggling to put food on the table. Our moderated panel will talk about how their organizations have pivoted to creating programs that provide food security for the industry community as well as for the broader communities where they are located, and how the planning field can replicate and build off these successes to reduce food insecurity in times of pandemic and beyond.

Join our moderator and panelists in this conversation:

  • Jes McBride, founder of Open Silo and panel moderator
  • Celia Ward-Wallace, co-founder of South LA Cafe
  • Othón Nolasco, co-founder of No Us Without You
  • Alex Ramirez, program manager of the NELA Mercadito at LA Más

As part of this free event and in the spirit of holiday giving, we are encouraging participants to contribute to the organizations. Contributions made through this platform will be matched by APA Los Angeles (up to $2,000). Funds will go towards the programs that provide food directly to individuals straining under the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
