Job Description
KOUNKUEY DESIGN INITIATIVE is currently seeking a planning intern to add to our growing team in Los Angeles, CA. This is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated and creative self-starter to work directly with under-resourced communities throughout Southern California on community-driven development. The position is based in our downtown Los Angeles office; there will be opportunities to accompany staff to projects throughout L.A., in the Eastern Coachella Valley, and other areas in Southern California.
Job Description:
The Planning Intern will work closely with the Planning, Design, and Community Departments to support our participatory design process, economic and social development programs, mobility planning, and site planning on various public space projects in the Southern California region. The Planning Intern will support project managers on planning, policy, and community organizing projects and campaigns to activate vacant land, turn streets into play spaces, create new parks, and improve transportation infrastructure. The Planning Intern will also assist in the development of new projects addressing homelessness, schoolyards, and other topics.
The Planning Intern will be expected to work from our downtown office a minimum of 12 hours a week. (We’re open to occasional exceptions based on coursework, trips, etc.)

Required Experience / Skills / Education
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate or graduate-level coursework in Urban Planning or related field
- Strong commitment to social justice
- Excellent writing, analytical, and research abilities
- Proficient in Adobe InDesign and GIS preferred
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (verbal and written) preferred, but not required
- Must have Work Study status
