Job Description
This position supervises a team of planners primarily responsible for policy development and implementation, as well as public engagement campaigns that address critical policy issues and strategic planning exercises. A breadth of up-to-date technical knowledge and proficiency with drafting and implementing Zoning Code language is required to be effective in this position. Candidates must demonstrate a deep knowledge base of current urban planning practices based on professional experience and that of peer cities. This role requires the ability to design processes for project implementation and public outreach, and the skillset to synthesize large quantities of information and conceptualize, organize and execute clear public-facing material for easy understanding at the neighborhood, Boards and Commissions and Council levels. A proven ability to build effective interdepartmental relationships as well as strong community partnerships is also vital. This is a “working supervisor” position in that the Principal Planner has assigned work in addition to supervising the work of a team. Superior communication and coaching skills with experience in staff development and/or mentoring and strategies to work with professional staff of varying abilities and personalities is critical to success in this position. Major job duties include the following:
- Supervise strategic planning team with some development review work
- Direct policy research, data analysis, public engagement, and draft recommendations
- Implementation of adopted policy
- Ability to think creatively about process and means for accomplishing high profile projects with limited resources
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Landscape Architecture, or a closely related field. Master’s degree and AICP certification are desirable.
Four years of recent, paid, progressively responsible municipal planning work experience. At least two years of the required experience must have included supervising or coordinating the work of others.
