Job Description
The City and County of Denver’s Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is seeking qualified individuals to fill a full-time Senior City Planner – Urban Design position in our Planning Services Division’s Citywide Planning and Implementation work group.
The Senior City Planner will develop and lead planning projects with a focus on urban design and regulatory implementation. This includes writing major changes to the Denver Zoning Code, writing design standards and guidelines, preparing graphics, and testing zoning concepts in three-dimensional models. The position will be a key member of a team of dedicated planners committed to implementing our city’s visionary new plans: Comprehensive Plan 2040 and Blueprint Denver.
Additionally, this individual can expect to:
- Lead regulatory projects to implement planning goals, including writing amendments to the Denver Zoning Code and drafting and reviewing design standards and guidelines.
- Coordinate complex planning and urban design projects, which may include multi-agency/multi-jurisdictional efforts and may include overseeing the work of consultants and staff. This entails developing scopes of work.
- Provide input on infrastructure design projects and fostering partnerships with other implementing agencies and organizations.
- Produce hand sketches/conceptual drawings. Integrates various visualization and three-dimensional modeling software to test urban design concepts.
- Engage the public in planning including through facilitating meetings, making effective presentations, and bringing together interested stakeholders to discuss proposed planning initiatives, assess obstacles, evaluate opposing views and interests, and determine areas of support.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Our ideal candidate has:
- Experience writing and applying regulatory tools including zoning code and design standards and guidelines.
- Experience working in both the private and public sectors and in urban and suburban contexts.
- Experience working effectively with and managing multidisciplinary teams is essential.
- Excellent writing, broad communication, and urban design skills are required.
- Commitment to integrating equity into planning/regulatory work.
- Proficiency in SketchUp and Adobe Creative Suite is required.
- GIS and data analysis (demographics, market/economic trends) skills are desired.
- Strong attention to detail and highly organized
- Self-motivated and motivated to help others
- Proficient with Spanish Language Skills – Speaking, reading and writing
- Committed to integrating equity into planning
