Job Description

ABOUT CITY FABRICK:

City Fabrick is a nonprofit multi-disciplinary design studio restoring, reshaping, and empowering communities through collaborative public-interest, design, planning, policy development, and advocacy. We partner with governments, health agencies, affordable housing providers, community partners, and other nonprofit organizations to address environmental justice, food insecurity, open space access, transportation safety, climate resiliency, housing affordability, and gentrification. Based in Southern California, City Fabrick is an independent organization that works beyond the conventional client-consultant framework, having the capacity to collaborate with community partners on mission-related work as well as make positive change in the community by supporting resident-led initiatives.

City Fabrick’s collaborative structure provides City Fabrick team members the ability to work across a range of project types and scales, whether developing messaging for advocacy campaigns, developing material for engaging residents about planning, or informing residents of what makes a pedestrian paradise, or facilitating community workshops. This creative nimbleness goes to the core of our approach to problem solving someone goes to an architecture firm and receives an architect’s solution; they go to a landscape architecture firm and are given a landscape design solution; and so on. City Fabrick recognizes the solution involves elevating community voices and might be something as radical as removing a freeway, or simple as designing a multilingual flier, or as unexpected as painting surplus roadway with beautiful patterns to become a public plaza.

Our multidisciplinary design studio operates as a fertile environment for creative experimentation; constantly looking for ways to redefine the physical environment for people. As City Fabrick’s work includes a broad range of project types, applicants will be expected to be flexible, collaborative, and resourceful. Current projects span environmental design, graphic design, branding, and communications, building design, landscape design, urban design, planning and policy development.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under supervision of the Principal and Directors, the Graphic Designer [Designer] will work with a diverse team of designers and planners on a wide variety of projects through all aspects of research, design, engagement, and production. The work spans all scales and types of publicly beneficial projects, collaborating with other nonprofit organizations, government agencies, local partners, and residents to make positive change in communities. These current projects include but are not limited to branding and style guides, community programs, planning and design for new parks and affordable housing communities, policy initiatives related to food systems and climate resilient communities. This position will require strong design and creative capacities in addition to communication and organizational skills.

The Designer should have a passion to tell stories through visual narrative, with an aptitude for content creation, an interest in cities and a solid understanding of the influence that design, communications, and community engagement have on building community. This position involves a solid understanding of the dynamics of communication, from printed and electronic collateral to physical installations and environmental graphics to personal contact and social media, and how to effectively use these tools to share ideas and engage residents, stakeholders, and partners to accomplish collective goals. City Fabrick expects a self-motivated Designer that takes an active part in defining solutions and success with our clients and partners.
