Job Description

The Opportunity:
The Long Range Planning Division links land use, sustainability, the public realm, and mobility for thoughtful decision-making to support a
vibrant, livable West Hollywood. West Hollywood has become a leader among cities for its visionary approach to planning. Our innovative
strategies have received local, state, and national awards, making us a model for other cities.

Join our growing team of creative planning professionals engaged in a wide range of innovative planning and policy programs. This
position requires excellent project management skills, a passion for community engagement, excellent communication skills, and
demonstrated (or potential) expertise in various facets of land use policy. This position will coordinate projects with internal and external
partners and be responsible for completing complex, politically sensitive projects. Active Long Range Planning Division Projects include:
implementing the newly adopted Climate Adaptation and Action Plan, facilitating Metro Rail expansion into West Hollywood, developing a
Transportation Management Organization, addressing the housing crisis through zoning and policy changes, and a municipal electric
vehicle charging expansion project, among many others.

The Position:
The Associate Planner performs complex technical and professional functions related to urban planning projects and programs, including
processing land use and development permits; reviewing land use and development proposals and providing advice; collecting, analyzing,
and presenting planning data; interacting with customers to disseminate information related to property requirements, ordinances, laws,
codes, etc.; reviewing submitted plans, blueprints, etc.; and preparing reports for presentation to various groups, commissions, etc.

The ideal candidate is passionate about planning in vibrant urban environments and is a champion of resilient, inclusive, sustainable, and
equitable communities. They are advocates for excellence in planning and public policy for citizen empowerment and will work to protect
and enhance our natural and built environment. Their skills and experience should bring a thoughtful, creative approach to delivering
effective and efficient projects. Excellent oral and written communication skills, an appreciation for good graphic design, and experience
implementing innovative community engagement strategies are essential. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of strong
project management, great attention to detail, and policy implementation experience is desirable.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in urban planning or a related field; and,
  • Two to three years of progressively responsible experience; or,
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the
    essential functions of the job.
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification (desirable)
