Job Description

The position of Senior Planner plays an integral part in the Community Development Department and will regularly interact with the Deputy Director and Director of the Department. The incumbent will play a key role in furthering the goals and policies of the City as it relates to the completion of current and long-range planning projects in the Community Development Department, which currently include preparation of a mixed-use overlay district and associated code updates In this capacity, the Senior Planner must be ready to assist developers, architects, engineers, and the business community with the technical expertise required to review and process complex applications. Additionally, the Senior Planner will serve as the project planner on a wide range of advanced planning projects, which require a general understanding of environmental, housing, transportation, and conservation issues and practices. The position plays an integral role in the day-to-day operations of the Planning Division including counter coverage, site inspections, and overall public interface. The Senior Planner will also provide supervisory support and mentorship in the Planning Division. The incumbent can be expected to handle multiple projects and attend evening meetings on a weekly basis. Some work on weekends may be needed.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in urban planning, community development, geography, business or public administration, or a related field and five (5) years of professional experience in planning, zoning and related community development activities.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) desirable.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
