Job Description

About Raimi + Associates

Raimi + Associates is a multidisciplinary planning, policy, urban design, and applied research firm with offices in Berkeley and Los Angeles. We are advocates, collaborators, organizers, and pioneers committed to creating healthy and resilient places. To address the complexity of communities, R+A integrates interrelated disciplines — land use and urban design, sustainability and green building, climate action and adaptation, public health and equity, and community engagement — into planning, urban design, and applied research efforts.

About the Position

R+A is hiring urban designers with a range of experience from Entry Level to Senior Urban Designers. The positions offer the opportunity to take on a range of responsibilities, with a focus on urban design, physical planning, preparing development and design regulations, designing streetscape improvements, supporting community engagement, helping manage projects, and assisting with business development and proposal writing. Candidates should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban design and/or architecture and, for the Intermediate and Senior levels, have 3+ years of relevant work experience. The ideal candidate should be an independent self-starter who enjoys a casual and fun work environment and is able to multi-task and remain organized and focused within the fast-paced demands of consulting.

Responsibilities

  • Urban design support on a variety of projects, including site planning studies, design concepts for streetscape improvements and placemaking, specific plans to zoning and form-based codes.
  • Writing, research, and policy development for planning and design documents.
  • Assisting with preparation and facilitation of inclusive public engagement efforts.
  • 3D modeling, graphic design, data analysis, GIS analysis, and map-making.
  • Project management (may vary depending on level of experience).
  • Preparing proposals and supporting advance marketing.

Salary and Benefits

  • A competitive annual salary:
o Urban Designer (Entry Level): $60,000 to $80,000, DOE
o Intermediate Urban Designer: $75,000 to $95,000, DOE
o Senior Urban Designer: $90,000 to $120,000, DOE
  • Annual bonus
  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision
  • Professional development stipend and opportunities
  • Hybrid and flexible work environment

Required Experience / Skills / Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture or urban design.
  • Relevant work experience in the planning/urban design field, including familiarity with master or specific plans, zoning codes, form-based codes, general plans, and other planning documents.
o Urban Designer (Entry Level): 0-2 years of relevant work experience in the planning field.
o Intermediate Urban Designer: Minimum of 3+ years of relevant work experience.
o Senior Urban Designer: Minimum of 6+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience using 3-D modeling software (SketchUp, AutoCAD, ArcGIS etc.), and GIS.
  • Experience using graphic design, document layout, and infographics skills, using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Some knowledge of land use planning (General Plans, Specific Plans, zoning codes, FBC, CEQA).
  • Fluency in spoken and/or written Spanish is desired but not required.
  • Interest in and/or experience working on public engagement programs in diverse communities.

Application Instructions

Send an email with a cover letter (may be in the body of the email), resume, and, if relevant, a portfolio of work (10 pages max) to [email protected]. Please put “Urban Designer Application” in the subject line.
