Job Description

Are you passionate about shaping the future of communities through innovative planning strategies? The City of Ventura Community Development Planning Division is seeking a talented individual to join our team as a Senior Planner.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Planner, you will play a pivotal role in the city’s planning efforts, reporting to the City’s Principal Planner. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of professional planning work, including current and advance land use planning, environmental analysis, design review, historic preservation, affordable housing, and economic development. However, your primary focus will be on researching, analyzing, and updating the City’s General Plan, Housing Element, Local Coastal Program, and other related community plans.

This advanced-journey position offers the opportunity to lead key programs within the Community Development Department, such as General Plan amendments, community plan creation and updates, and data collection and analysis for long-range planning documents. You will also have the chance to manage and review CEQA documents, particularly environmental impact reports, in collaboration with consultants. Working independently with minimum supervision, you will take on lead responsibility for major projects or program areas, monitoring the progress of consultants and contractors, and handling complex and specialized assignments.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate for this Senior Planner position will:

  • Have Technical Expertise: Demonstrate expertise in regional planning, public policy, and legislative updates, particularly in overseeing updates to the General Plan, Housing Element, and Local Coastal Program.
  • Be a Collaborative Team Player: Work effectively within a team environment, collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to achieve planning objectives.
  • Stay Informed: Stay abreast of environmental development trends, State and Federal law and regulation updates, and possess a thorough knowledge of long-range planning topics.
  • Be Results-Oriented: Display a results-oriented mindset, with a keen understanding of the principles, practices, and philosophies of planning to effectively communicate and present to various audiences, including the public, state agencies, and City governing boards.
  • Desirable Certification: Possess certification through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), although this is not mandatory.

Why Join Us

Join a dynamic team dedicated to shaping the future of Ventura through forward-thinking planning initiatives. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on the city’s development while working in a collaborative and supportive environment. If you are ready to take your planning career to the next level and contribute to the growth and prosperity of our community, we encourage you to apply today!

Note: This position offers the opportunity to work independently with minimum supervision and lead responsibility for major projects or program areas.
