Job Description

Under general direction of the Planning Manager, the Senior Planner performs advanced level professional planning work, acts as a project manager on complex planning projects, provides technical and functional oversight for professional planning staff. The Senior Planner is also responsible for monitoring the preparation and implementation of the City’s General Plan and environmental documents; confer with engineers, developers, architects, a variety of agencies and the general public in acquiring information and coordinating planning and zoning matters. This position will serve a vital role within the Planning Division.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about public service; a creative problem-solver and team player; a leader with a positive attitude to serve as a role model; knowledgeable about current and advanced planning; and contributes ideas about innovative planning practices and processes. The individual provides exceptional customer service as a facilitator rather than a regulator by helping the community realize their visions for new developments, improvements, and businesses. Other qualities include excellent written and communication skills, detail-oriented, time management skills, analytical, life-long learner, and resourceful.
The work is performed in an office environment with controlled temperature settings. The incumbent may need to be in outside elements at different project sites and other related job duties.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, planning, urban design, architecture, business administration or closely related field.
  • Four years of increasingly responsible professional planning experience.
  • Master’s degree and lead or supervisory experience is highly desirable.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record are required at the time of appointment and as a condition of employment.
