Salary: $153,024 – $216,252 annually

Santa Ana, located in central Orange County, is the eleventh largest city in California with a population of 325,000. The city is 10 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, 33 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 90 miles north of San Diego. A Charter city incorporated in 1886, Santa Ana is known for its neighborhood pride, enriching cultural experience, appreciation of diversity and thriving economic climate.
The Executive Director works under the direction of the City Manager and in close coordination with department heads, the Planning Commission and the Historic Resources Commission, as well as the community, to manage the processes that guide and sustain the development and preservation of this densely urban, culturally diverse city. The Executive Director provides leadership and direction to 70 full-time staff in three divisions: Planning, Building Safety (New Construction and Permits/Plan Check) and Code Enforcement. The ideal candidate is proactive and results-oriented, possessing strong problem-solving and team building skills and able to establish effective working relationships with elected officials, business and community leaders, and residents.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
The position requires five years of progressively responsible management experience, including experience as a director or assistant director in a municipal planning department. A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in public administration, urban planning or a related field is required.
