Job Description
VACANCY
The City of Pomona has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Assistant Planner to join the Pomona Planning team.
The Assistant Planner reports to the Development Services Manager. Under general supervision, these positions perform professional level work in the field of current and/or advance planning; provide information and assistance to developers and the public on planning related matters; and provide highly technical and responsible support to the Planning Manager.

Education and Experience
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of urban planning and development and historic preservation. California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Recent developments, current literature, sources of information, and research techniques related to the field of urban planning. Modern office methods, practices, procedures, and related equipment. Safe driving principles and practices.
Skill to: Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software. Operate a motor vehicle safely.
Ability to: Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Analyze and compile technical and statistical information and prepare routine reports. Prepare basic planning graphics including site plans and land use maps. Read and interpret construction drawings. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Check plans submitted by developers and the public; review applications for completeness and accuracy.
Prepare and supervise the preparation of advance planning projects, reports, maps, studies, and related planning issues.
Prepare and supervise the preparation of planning materials used for public hearings.
Compile and direct the compilation of data for land use studies and related field investigations.
Prepare environmental review documents for CEQA projects.
Review and comment on the CEQA documents of neighboring cities.
Review projects for conformance with the Historic Preservation Ordinance; prepare surveys and studies of historic preservation issues; maintain historic preservation databases.
Oversee, participate in, and coordinate special planning, zoning, and environmental studies; prepare reports and findings.
Serve as staff to a variety of commissions, committees, and groups; prepare the agenda and appropriate reports; make and present findings and recommendations.
Present planning and zoning matters to the Planning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Cultural Arts Commission, and citizen committees.
Develop and present recommendations on development permits, variances, tentative tract maps, residential planned development permits, and other zoning applications; prepare appropriate reports.
Interpret planning and zoning regulations to the public at the counter, by telephone, email, and by written correspondence.
Coordinate planning activities with other City departments and with outside agencies.
Participate in the work of professional and technical employees including data collection, analysis, plan formulation, and implementation of a wide variety of planning, zoning, and environmental review activities.
Maintain detailed socio-economic data and other relevant statistics.
Perform inspections for projects to ensure compliance with approved conditions of approval, and other City ordinances and codes.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Supervision Exercised
May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.
Special Requirements
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
