Job Description
The City of San Gabriel Community Development Department is recruiting for Associate Planner. The ideal candidate is an up-and-coming planning professional who is highly motivated, analytical, personable, enthusiastic, and prepared to work for a multifaceted department that provides planning, design, and economic development services. The ideal candidate will have outstanding written and oral communication skills, strong analytical abilities, exceptional technical and mathematic abilities, sound judgement and tact, and excellent organizational skills. The ideal candidate will also work well under pressure, effectively manage time-sensitive deadlines, and have a strong understanding of the Subdivision Map Act, Planning and Zoning Law, and the California Environmental Quality Act. Most importantly, the ideal candidate will understand and exemplify the principles of public service and the organizational mission for the City of San Gabriel.
Under general supervision, the Associate Planner performs professional level work in the field of current and/or advance planning and provides highly technical and responsible support to the planning division. The Associate Planner reviews plans in accordance with federal, state, and local codes; processes planning applications in accordance with the City’s zoning code; prepares and presents reports; makes recommendations; provides information and assistance to applicants, developers, consultants, outside agencies, and the public on matters regarding land use, development, and environmental review; and performs other related duties as assigned.
The Associate Planner is responsible for understanding, presenting, and applying government planning rules and regulations, principles and practices, and laws to issues concerning the General Plan, zoning, land, redevelopment, economic development, and the environment. This position is also responsible for effectively and tactfully presenting planning projects and preparing effective written communications regarding complex planning issues.

Required Experience / Skills / Education
Bachelor’s degree in planning or equivalent from an accredited institution;
Three years (3) of experience in urban regional planning, redevelopment, or a closely related field.
Possess and/or obtain a California’s Class C Driver’s License prior to appointment;
Maintain a California Class C Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
Local government experience is desirable.
