Job Description
DEPARTMENT
The Community Development Department has four divisions that are comprised of Building & Safety, Code Enforcement, Planning & Zoning, and View Restoration & Preservation. The Department is focused on upholding exceptional customer service and delivering efficient and timely review of proposed development projects.
POSITION
This is a TEMPORARY, non-benefited, at-will position that is anticipated to be no longer than a 6-month assignment. The position of Senior Planner plays an integral role in the Community Development Department and will regularly interact with the Deputy Director and Director of the Department. The Senior Planner holds responsibilities spanning the entire spectrum of the planning function.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be focused on upholding the exceptional professional customer service trademark the City has set. A significant and critical aspect of this position is to establish and/or enhance professional relationships. Working effectively with regional agencies is a must for the Senior Planner and this includes the County as well as the California Coastal Commission.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in urban planning, community development, geography, business or public administration, or a related field and five (5) years of professional experience in planning, zoning and related community development activities.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) desirable.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
