Job Description
This position will report to the Deputy Director and be a supervisor and member of the Current Planning team. The position typically has three direct reports and is responsible for supervising most discretionary applications proposing development within the City. The ideal candidate will have the required experience to lead and perform expert level professional planning work that includes supporting and implementing the City’s General Plan, Zoning and Local Coastal Program. The Principal Planner provides competent and expert advice to elected and appointed City decision-makers, community organizations and the general public. Areas of responsibility include general urban planning and zoning, Coastal Act implementation, California Environmental Quality Act compliance, transportation, housing, economic development and contract management.
The ideal candidate will be an effective leader who can mentor and develop staff while working on multi-department teams, thrive in a fast paced and highly public participatory environment, have an open-door policy and be outgoing and engaging. The selected candidate will have outstanding communication skills and be able to present expert advice to the decision-makers and community stakeholders. Lastly, the ideal candidate will be confident and adept at presenting messages appropriately regardless of the venue or audience.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Four years of responsible professional current and/or advanced local government planning experience including some experience in the preparation or review of environmental documents.
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, public or business administration or a related field.
License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
