APPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THIS INTERNSHIP IS OPEN UNTIL A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF QUALIFIED APPLICATIONS ARE RECEIVED AND MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME. THIS POSITION IS AN AT-WILL UNPAID STUDENT INTERNSHIP.
This is an unpaid Student Internship position. Under close supervision performs a variety of municipal planning tasks. The Planning Division team will work with the Student Intern to develop a program that is tailored to the Student Intern’s strengths and interests within the Planning Division’s current projects, programs, and work related needs.

The Student Intern is an unpaid internship that provides training and work experiences in order to assist in preparing the individual for a career in Planning.Supervision Received

Does not supervise. - Examples of Essential Functions
- Specific duties and functions will be determined based on the plan developed for the Student Intern by the Planning Division team. Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:Assist planning staff with counter work, answering telephone inquiries, and fielding questions from the general public, developers and contractors regarding planning, zoning and other municipal code requirements;
Research, collect, compile, record, and summarize technical data; assisting higher level planning staff assemble documentation for projects and presentations;
Prepare public notices or property owner verifications;
Compose staff reports, public hearing notices and presentations to the Planning Commission;
Assist staff in preparing exhibits for City Council and Planning Commission;
Conduct special projects and assignments in a variety of areas such as legislative analysis, demographic analysis and other areas related to urban planning;
Reviews plans and applies provision of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations, and
Assists with Planning Division file and document organization in coordination with data.
The City, at its discretion may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
- Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
- Training and Experience
The ideal candidate has at least three years of college coursework, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in planning; and is currently enrolled or has recently graduated from an accredited college or university program to obtain an Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Planning, GIS or applicable field related to this Student Intern position, such as architecture, geography, or political science.License Requirement
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record is required at time of appointment and throughout the entire period of this internship.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to: research, analyze, and interpret requirements of local, State and Federal Legislation; and explain rules and procedures clearly to the public.English/Spanish bilingual skills are highly desirable.

- California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice System
The Student Intern is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice program provides information on the intern’s driving record and Driver’s License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. If the Student Intern is assigned a City vehicle, the intern must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles.Physical Demands and Work Environment
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by the Student Intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this internship. While performing the duties of this internship, the Student Intern is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The Student Intern is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, crouch and reach with hands and arms. The Student Intern must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this internship include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and perform office machine operations. Student Interns are not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
