Job Description

The Arroyo Group is seeking a curious and motivated urban planner to support the firm’s work in housing policy and development of zoning tools.

 

The Arroyo Group is a 45-year-old planning and urban design firm based in Pasadena that is committed to strong personal and company values, social equity, and high-quality, community-responsive design. Our major segments of work are long-range planning including Specific Plans, Downtown Plans and Transit-Oriented Development Plans; Housing Elements; Complete Streets design; and Affordable Housing.

 

Our clients consist primarily of public agencies and non-profit organizations, including religious congregations, and our planning and design approach integrates in-depth community participation, understanding of economic realities and creative urban design to create viable, equitable and beloved places.

 

The selected individual will become an important part of our small, multi-disciplinary team and have significant growth potential. Our preferred candidate would be motivated by a desire to make a difference in the community, particularly for those of lesser means, and will have the heart, understanding and experience to work closely with local government and in political environments. Initial work responsibilities will include research, analysis and writing of Housing Elements and Specific Plans for local jurisdictions in the Southeast Los Angeles County region.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Analyze the community and legal context and recommend policies, programs and regulations for land use planning, development design, housing programs
  • Draft coherent and precise language for reports and regulatory documents
  • Communicate ideas clearly through presentations, graphic-based reports, tables, charts, etc.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations in support of religious congregations seeking entitlements to build affordable housing and other development projects
  • Support the development of proposals, statements of qualifications, networking meetings and other business development activities
  • Participate in and support community engagement efforts, including community meetings and events, social media engagement, and multimedia presentations

Required Experience / Skills / Education

  • Master’s degree in Planning (final semester students OK)
  • 1-5 years’ experience in a professional planning position in California. Experience working in a local Planning/Community Development Department highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with California housing and zoning law and standard practices
  • Familiarity with the cultural, political and built context of Southern California, particularly the multicultural communities of the San Gabriel Valley and Gateway Cities. Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese a plus.
  • Proficiency in computer tools including Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator & InDesign at minimum), ArcGIS, Microsoft Office and SurveyMonkey
