Job Description
Council District 14: The 14th Council District in the City of Los Angeles covers a variety of communities, from Downtown Los Angeles to Boyle Heights, El Sereno, and North East Los Angeles.
The Job: The Office of Councilmember de Leon is seeking a Planning Deputy to work on all aspects of the district’s planning and land use issues, from individual cases to policy and plans under the supervision of the Planning Director. This job is an opportunity to learn planning processes and directly work on pressing and high profile land use issues facing the City of Los Angeles.
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Weekly tracking of planning cases and policy through the public process,
- Policy research and development,
- Monitoring and staffing Council and community meetings
- Preparing briefings for the Councilmember and senior staff,
- Regular outreach and interaction with key community and stakeholder groups,
- Response to general queries on planning in the district,
- Public representation of the Councilmember at hearings and community meetings.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
The Candidate: The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills, strong verbal and writing ability, sound judgment, empathy, and a passion for meaningful, sustainable change in Los Angeles. Candidates must be ready to work in a high-energy, fast-paced and collaborative work environment, including occasional nights and weekends.
Building trust between our office and the communities we serve is paramount; applicants should value transparency and accountability in a working environment. As a public servant in a Councilmember’s office, you are an extension of the elected representative chosen by the people of CD 14; therefore you will be held to the highest possible ethical standards on and off the clock.
Candidates should have several years work experience in planning and land use and/or hold a post-secondary degree. Familiarity with the City of L.A. is a plus.
Spanish fluency desired.
