Land Use Planner

Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, LLP / Los Angeles, CA
Posted on: June 7, 2021

Application Deadline: Rolling

Job Description

Brief Description:

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP is looking for a land use planner with a minimum of three years of relevant experience to join our preeminent land use practice.

If you are entrepreneurially-minded, and a builder, and you are looking to work alongside nationally recognized leaders in their fields, this might be the right opportunity for you.

Manatt’s unique professional services approach provides a combination of legal services and strategic business services – with a team of lawyers, land use planners, real estate brokers, and business strategy consultants – to meet the needs of our clients. With significant depth and experience across most real estate asset classes and all phases of development projects, we help clients navigate complex matters involving financings, joint ventures, acquisitions, dispositions, affordable housing, leasing, public/private transactions, debt and equity finance, hospitality, construction, and design and loan restructurings.

Manatt’s land use group works with developers, property owners, builders, investors, contractors, public agencies and nonprofits to guide complex and sensitive projects through an increasingly intricate regulatory process.  Manatt’s unique professional services approach coupled with our deep industry expertise allows us to build relationships and develop credibility with clients and, in turn, perform cutting-edge work to help guide them through a dynamic, ever-evolving legal and business landscape.

We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated and excited to learn and to take on more responsibility to both support and significantly contribute to Manatt’s land use practice.  The ideal candidate will have professional work experience in land planning, zoning review and development permitting, including experience with due diligence research; entitlement application preparation and coordination; lobbying and related communication with local government officials and staff (presentations to various community organizations and/or decision-making bodies).  Direct experience working for municipal planning departments or other planning agencies and environmental experience, including with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), is desirable. Demonstrated interest in local and state politics and land use policy is a plus.  AICP and LEED certifications are also a plus.

Requirements:

  • Minimum three years of land use planning experience and interest in and enthusiasm for real estate development
  • Master’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field (preferred); or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent related work experience
  • Excellent and proactive written and verbal communication skills in a variety of settings and media
  • Excellent and detail-oriented research, analytical and proofreading skills
  • A self-starter who likes a fast-paced environment and has the ability to both work independently and be part of a team and collaborate with others
  • Effective and efficient problem-solving capabilities with the ability to work proactively to develop creative solutions in order to meet client and team needs

We believe that a diverse workforce that reflects the communities in which we live, work and serve enriches Manatt’s culture and enhances our ability to understand our clients’ needs and develop better, more impactful solutions.
