Job Description

ABOUT THE POSITION:
This position is a paid internship in the Planning Division. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for college students looking for on-the-job experience in a variety of areas within Planning. The division is flexible and willing to work around your schedule. The internship is open to students enrolled in an accredited college or university program to obtain an Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Planning, or applicable field related to the position, and graduates up to one-year post graduation. The internship will start as soon as it is filled.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all team members in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional position-specific duties.
  • Assists the Planning Division with counter work and answering telephone inquiries and questions from the general public, developers and contractors regarding planning, zoning, and other municipal code requirements.
  • Provides day-to-day administrative and technical support to the Planning Division.
  • Assists in the review of submitted plan reviews or discretionary applications for conformance with the City’s General Plan, Specific Plan, and Zoning Code.
  • Assists in developing and implementing the Geographic Information System (GIS) components for land based, analysis and performs site inspections of residential and commercial projects.
  • Updates maps and other planning documents, and photocopies construction documents, exhibits, and reports as directed.
  • Assists in researching, compiling, arranging, analyzing and interpreting data, developing reports on special projects and technical issues as assigned.
  • Prepares, assembles and distributes memoranda, letters, information, and other communications.
  • Promotes City goals and priorities in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE
The ideal candidate is expected to work 20 hours a week during the business hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday – Thursday at Rosemead City Hall. Candidates must be available to work all assigned shifts, including evenings and weekends to assist in special projects and events.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Two years of college coursework; OR an equivalent combination of education and administrative/clerical experience with interests preferably in municipal urban planning, renewal, and redevelopment.
Required Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess or have the ability to obtain a California Driver’s License and maintain a satisfactory driving record. Copy of proof of automobile insurance will be required before driving to conduct City business.

Required Knowledge of:
  • City operations, policies, procedures and general functions of public works programs and services highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in the use of database, spreadsheets, and Microsoft Office.
  • Principles of record keeping, case files and records management; and customer service principles and methods.

Required Skill in:

  • Maintaining electronic records, files and databases.
  • Entering information into a computer system with speed and accuracy.
  • Operating basic office equipment, and a personal computer utilizing standard software.
  • Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
 Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Work is usually performed in a standard office environment; may vary according to job assignment.  May be required to travel to various sites, locations and/or events.
  • Team members are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours.
