JOB TYPE: Full-Time, Permanent
DEPARTMENT: Planning & Land Use
COMPENSATION: Starting Salary for Planner I is $55K+ (DOQ)
POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 2
LOCATION: Arcadia, CA (no remote work)

OVERVIEW:

Small consulting firm seeks Land Use/Urban Planner to process land use entitlement applications and other related permits with city & county planning offices throughout Southern California. Immediate positions are available.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Level I:

One (1) year experience comparable to that of a Planning Intern or Planning Technician. Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy or a closely related field is required.

Level II:

Two (2) years of professional planning experience equivalent to a Planner I or Assistant Planner. Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree in Planning may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

Level III:

Two (2) years of professional planning experience equivalent to a Planner II or Associate Planner. Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree in Planning may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

ALL LEVELS:

License:

Possess a valid California driver’s license and have dependable transportation.

Skills:

• Self-motivated team player with strong work ethic in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication, research and writing skills
• Demonstrates strong and effective organizational and time management skills
• Experience speaking in front of groups and agency officials
• Ability to effectively strategize, prepare convincing presentations, negotiate and advocate for clients
• Proven experience and competence in community outreach
• Must have a high-level of comfort and confidence building relationships with law enforcement, neighborhood organizations and city/county personnel
• Proficient in MS Office, working knowledge of CAD, GIS, ZIMAS or Adobe Suite is desirable

Job Duties and Functions:

• Conducts research and determines permit requirements and project feasibility for new and existing clients
• Interprets laws, ordinances and municipal codes with a strong understanding of zoning
• Prepares due diligence reports and findings of fact
• Reviews plans for compliance and coordinates with architects to meet city/county requirements
• Coordinates with clients to prepare land use entitlement applications
• Maintains project schedule, keeps detailed project records, meets deadlines and facilitates all aspects of proper case management
• Works closely with community stakeholders, including Planning Commission, City Council and neighborhood groups
• Presents at public hearings and neighborhood group meetings to garner project support
• Performs general office duties and other tasks, as assigned
• Experience working with city of Los Angeles, a plus
