Job Description

This position will report to the Deputy Director and be a supervisor and member of the Current Planning team. The position typically has three direct reports that work on a variety of development applications for both private applicants or City projects. The position also is assigned a number of large and complex development applications or long range planning efforts or code amendments. The ideal candidate will have the required experience to lead a team and perform expert level professional planning work that includes supporting and implementing the City’s General Plan, Zoning and Local Coastal Program. The Principal Planner provides competent and expert advice to elected and appointed City decision-makers, community organizations and the general public. Areas of responsibility include general urban planning and zoning, Coastal Act implementation, California Environmental Quality Act compliance, transportation, housing, economic development and contract management.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

Experience: Four years of responsible professional current and/or advanced local government planning experience including some experience in the preparation or review of environmental documents.

Education: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, public or business administration or a related field.

License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
