Job Description
DESCRIPTION
The Department of Development Services has an immediate opening for Two Part-Time, Administrative Interns (Non-Career). These positions will support the Planning Bureau and will report to the Advance Planning Officer and the Current Planning Officer. The Department of Development Services has approximately 200 employees and includes the Administrative & Financial Services, Building & Safety, Code Enforcement, Housing & Neighborhood Services, and Planning Bureaus. The departments goal is to build a dynamic, safe, and sustainable city that honors its past and embraces the future. The Administrative Interns will gain practical experience in a municipal planning environment and would be exposed to all aspects of the development review process.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, Non-Career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Performs analysis to help improve the operational efficiency of the Planning Bureau;
- Supports Planning staff with research on proposed projects;
- Studies Advance and Current Planning initiatives;
- Assisting with day to day current planning duties such as answering the Zoning Hotline, researching zoning questions and conducting plan checks;
- Processing minor entitlements under the guidance of a Planner;
- Assisting with day to day historic preservation planning duties such as researching the history of properties and processing Certificates of Appropriateness;
- Assisting with day to day long-range planning duties such as community and demographic research and data analysis, drafting plans and policies, preparing and conducting community outreach and engagement activities;
- Provides assistance to the Advance Planning Officer and Current Planning Officer, as needed.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

Education and Experience:
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program with a focus/emphasis in the field of landscape architecture, engineering, urban and/or public policy, geography, urban planning, architecture, environmental design, or a closely related field. (proof required)
Skill and Ability to
- Compile, review and evaluate data;
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
- Use Modern English usage;
- Use Computers and learn related computer software applications and technology;
- To communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including appropriate use of grammar and punctuation;
- Learn more about and gain experience in Urban Planning and the public sector.
