Job Description
Background: The Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing (SCANPH) is the leading voice representing the affordable housing industry in a region of over 18 million residents, and our advocacy and programming efforts have contributed greatly toward assisting the financially vulnerable in our communities since 1985. SCANPH is uniquely situated to identify, prioritize, strategize, and lead policy and programming efforts that are designed to create an environment conducive to affordable housing development.
Headquartered in Los Angeles and led by a small but productive team, SCANPH regularly convenes programs and events featuring leading experts from across the industry to strengthen member knowledge and build capacity among member organizations. We also develop original policy research, and work to advance creative legislative proposals that will produce and preserve affordable housing.
SCANPH membership includes 1500 organizational-based members who are based primarily in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties, and include non-profit housing developers, private businesses, property management companies, government agencies, and social service organizations.
About the Role: SCANPH is seeking a full-time Membership and Communications Associate to join our team. You will be the key point of contact for the SCANPH membership and support communications to regularly inform members about our programming and advocacy work. This position coordinates the outreach and membership work that is key to the sustainability of our member-based organization. Core responsibilities (described in detail below) include membership outreach and dues collection, creating and disseminating communications materials, coordinating membership events and records, social media management, database maintenance, managing the membership committee, program support, member recruitment strategies, and general communications tasks as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess VERY strong project management skills, particularly exquisite attention to detail, speed mixed with accuracy, highly responsive, and a strong communicator with a desire to learn, take initiative, and advance awareness of affordable housing. A self-directed worker is paramount. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
Our membership and communications work seek to engage partners and a strong candidate will have an interest in affordable housing policy to ensure we remain responsive to member needs on a variety of emerging topics. Membership management and communications experience are preferable; however, a very quick learner possessing comfort with a high-performance team culture focused on personal accountability, continuous learning, urgency, and goal achievement could be considered a strong candidate. This position will be under the supervision of the Senior Director of Public Affairs & Programs.
Responsibilities:
• Membership Coordination: Coordinate membership recruitment, engagement, and outreach activities. Process memberships and maintain updated membership records.
• Oversee membership committee and implement key recommendations to build membership revenue around retention, recruitment, and new sources of income.
• Database and contact management: Maintain and update database records, record membership payments and other contributions, create contact lists and generate various reports as needed.
• Program and Event Support: Assist programs staff with a variety of program and membership activities, events, and meetings; annual Conference support
• Marketing: Help develop and implement marketing plans around membership, such as member quotes, testimonials, benefits, and marketing collateral. Consistently promote member benefits.
• Coordination of new fee structure around member properties
• Cultivate a researched list of prospects and Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
• Maintain and nurture relationships with both new and existing members.
• Graphic design support for collateral to retain and attract membership.
• Social Media Management
• Assist with communications, such as writing the monthly newsletter, and coordinate communications across SCANPH teams.
• Actively use company systems to manage projects i.e. airtable, Eventbrite, Google Sheets, etc.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Requirements:
• At least 3-5 years of professional experience in managing projects and/or relevant experience in membership, fundraising, marketing, public relations and/or communications.
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Excellent writing and communication skills, as well as keen attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks under short deadlines are essential qualities.
• Excellent PC and internet skills, including spreadsheets, Airtable, word processing and database experience. Graphic design, social media, document design, and website maintenance experience a plus.
• Thrive in a fast-paced environment and work well under pressure.
• Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
• Strong interpersonal, decision-making, and leadership skills.
• Understanding of and commitment to the mission and goals of SCANPH, including an interest in affordable housing.
• Ability to work within a small staff and handle diverse duties.
• Reliable transportation; a car to drive to venues/events and transport materials.

Employment Status: Full-time position
Office Environment: This position will be a virtual, work from home position until SCANPH staff fully returns to our offices in Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles. Upon return to the office, this person will be expected to work a minimum of two to three days a week in the office and have the ability to drive to venues and events throughout Southern California. Must be local to Los Angeles.
