Job Description
We are looking for an entry-level Architectural Historian in the Southern California area with
with a graduate degree in history, architectural history or historic preservation and at least 2 years of professional experience. Applicants must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Requirements in history and/or architectural history.
What You Will Do for ESA
As part of a growing group of architectural historians within ESA’s Cultural Resources Group, you will support a wide range of interesting architectural history projects including being part of interdisciplinary teams working on projects in our Water, Energy, Community Development, Transportation and Airports practices. Architectural Historians support a variety of project types including Historic Resource Evaluations/Assessments, Historic Context Statements, Historic Resource Surveys, Project Impact Analyses, Historic American Building Survey (HABS) projects, Cultural Resource chapters of CEQA Environmental Impact Reports, NHPA Section 106 Consultation services, and architectural design/entitlements consultation.
Tasks will include archival research using primary and secondary sources; historic resources surveys; documentation of resources on California Department of Parks and Recreation 523 Series Forms; preparation of historic resources assessments and evaluation reports, as well as other documentation; and contributions to environmental documents (EIS/EIRs, EA/MNDs, etc.). You’ll gain experience working on an interesting variety of projects within a dynamic historic preservation practice and you’ll have a meaningful impact on historic places in Southern California and beyond.
Apply critical thinking and problem solving to apply standard techniques, methods and procedures for a wide range of research projects.
Support the completion of project tasks including delivering specific components of a project’s scope on time and within budget under a Project Manager’s supervision.
Required Experience / Skills / Education
Who You Are
You are an effective team member and communicator who works collaboratively on multi-disciplinary teams.
You have education, training and experience in the history and architectural styles of the western U.S. and California (Southern California experience preferred). You hold an advanced degree in Architectural History or a related field, and have a minimum of 2 years of professional experience in historic preservation.
You are known for preparing reports and other documents that are clear, concise, well-written and supported and for your ability to present information understandably to project team members.
You have used your strong writing and editing skills to contribute to the recordation and evaluation of historic architectural resources. You have knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, CEQA, NEPA, and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards (experience conducting regulatory compliance reviews preferred) as well as the application of federal, state, and local evaluation criteria.
You follow through on your assignments to deliver your project tasks on time and within budget, checking your work for errors and accuracy.
You have a desire to learn new skills and gain exposure to documentation, evaluation, and treatment of a variety of resource types including urban and rural built resources, and transportation, water and energy infrastructure.
