The City of Lomita is seeking an exceptional leader and team player to fill the position of Community and Economic Development Director. The Community and Economic Development Department is comprised of Planning, Economic Development and Code Enforcement.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to manage current and advance planning projects while also capitalizing on the City’s many opportunities for economic development and community building. This individual will be an outstanding communicator who is comfortable interacting directly with a wide variety of stakeholders and skilled in building consensus and helping to build a shared vision. He/she will be accessible and willing to connect with the public and possess a reputation for being responsive, direct and transparent. In addition, the individual selected will be trustworthy and credible, and focused on bringing high quality projects to life.
The City of Lomita works a 9/80 work schedule with alternate Fridays off; Directors are given generous flexibility in managing their schedules. This position may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends for Council or Committee meetings and/or special events.
Under administrative direction, plans, organizes, manages, and provides administrative direction and oversight for all functions and activities of the Community and Economic Development Department including planning, housing, building, and code enforcement functions; formulates departmental policies, goals, and directives; coordinates assigned activities with other City departments, officials, outside agencies, and the public; fosters cooperative working relationships among City departments and with intergovernmental and regulatory agencies, and various public and private groups; provides highly responsible and complex professional assistance to the City Manager in areas of expertise; and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives administrative direction from the City Manager. Exercises direct supervision over supervisory, professional, technical, and administrative support staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a department director classification that oversees, directs, and participates in all activities of the Community and Economic Development Department, including short- and long-term planning as well as development and administration of departmental policies, procedures, and services. This class provides assistance to the City Manager in a variety of administrative, coordinative, analytical, and liaison capacities. Successful performance of the work requires knowledge of public policy, City functions and activities, including the role of the City Council, and the ability to develop, oversee, and implement projects and programs in a variety of areas. Responsibilities include coordinating the activities of the department with those of other departments and outside agencies and managing and overseeing the complex and varied functions of the department. The incumbent is accountable for accomplishing departmental planning and operational goals and objectives, and for furthering City goals and objectives within general policy guidelines.

- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in urban or regional planning, public administration, architecture, or a related field. Experience:
- Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible administrative government experience in planning, building, housing, or a related field, including five (5) years of management experience.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license
- Must be willing to attend evening meetings as required.
