Senior Planner

City of Cypress / Cypress City Hall – 5275 Orange Ave. Cypress 90630
Posted on: January 12, 2026

Application Deadline: 2/1/26

Job Description

The City of Cypress is seeking an experienced Senior Planner to join a collaborative, high-performing planning team. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned planner who is seeking meaningful responsibility, professional growth, and a healthy work-life balance in a supportive municipal environment.

Cypress offers a unique advantage: the City does not have a Planning Commission, which translates to limited evening meetings and a more predictable schedule. The City supports a flexible work environment and emphasizes efficiency and trust, so employees can focus on delivering high-quality results.

In this role, the Senior Planner will work on a wide range of current and long-range planning projects, including complex entitlement processing, zoning and General Plan implementation, CEQA compliance, subdivision map review, and affordable housing programs. The position involves managing consultant contracts, coordinating with other departments, and serving as a key contributor on high-profile projects.

The ideal candidate has strong technical planning skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage complex assignments with limited supervision. We are looking for a proactive professional who enjoys working in a small, collaborative team, values thoughtful problem-solving, and wants hands-on involvement in all aspects of municipal planning.

Required Experience / Skills / Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, Planning or a closely related field and six years of increasingly responsible professional experience within the planning, redevelopment, and/or economic development field, preferably in the public sector, including three years of project management experience.

A Master’s Degree in a field listed above is preferred and may be substituted for one year of experience.
