The City of Irvine seeks an Assistant/Associate Planner to perform entry-level professional planning, project management, and analysis tasks related to assigned projects or duties in the areas of development, environmental review, zoning, General Plan, and land use matters.
The current vacancy exists in the Project Entitlement/Current Planning section of the Community Development Department. The position may be filled at either the Assistant or Associate level, at the discretion of the Department Director, based upon the level of expertise of the candidate.
Your Impact
- Review development plans, documents, technical studies, and reports for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with General Plan, codes, ordinances, and state law, under direct supervision.
- Research and prepare memos, letters, and staff reports and present finding and recommendations to Department personnel and decision makers regarding development proposals.
- Analyze statistical, written and oral reports, and correspondence related to assigned planning and analytical tasks.
- Provide information to residents and customers regarding planning standards, codes and permit requirements at the public counter.
- Participate in the code compliance process, evaluating permit applications and compliance with conditions of approval.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Geography, Architecture, Economics, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration or related field.
- Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
- May require a valid California driver’s license.

Your Team
The mission of the City of Irvine Community Development Department is to provide thoughtful and efficient long-term planning and ongoing project review to ensure consistency with the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and Building Codes. Our team is focused on delivering a top-quality customer experience to the community through innovation and responsiveness, with integrity, flexibility, and professionalism.
The Project Entitlement team is tasked with the day-to-day processing of development applications. Each member of the team is a project manager, responsible for a large number of entitlement and code compliance cases. Designated employees are able to work a 9-80 schedule, with 9-hour days and every other Friday off. Additionally, our team currently has the option to work a hybrid telecommuting schedule, whereby planners may be approved to work approximately 45% of the time remotely. The decision to allow a telecommuting arrangement lies solely with the department director.
The Process
The selection process will include one or more rounds of interviews, with the requirement to complete a health physical and background investigation, prior to appointment. This recruitment may establish an eligibility list to fill future positions in similar and/or lower classifications within the organization.
