Job Description
We are looking for a mid-level Architectural Historian in the Southern California area with a graduate degree in history, architectural history or historic preservation and at least 5 years of professional experience. Applicants must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Requirements in history and/or architectural history.
What You Will Do for ESA
You will independently manage and conduct historic resources assessments. You will lead historic resources portions of multi-disciplinary projects engaged as part of a larger team of varied experts. You will manage and conduct historic research, the development of historic contexts, historic architectural survey and documentation, architectural descriptions, resource evaluations, and impacts analysis meeting OHP requirements.
You will serve as primary author of historic resource assessment reports and MND and EIR sections. You are also able to conduct and contribute general historical research to reports. You are known for preparing documents that are clear, concise, well-written and supported and are able to prepare draft scopes of work and budgets for small and mid-size projects and for selected tasks on large projects.
You will present information understandably and speak confidently about complex topics to colleagues, clients, agency staff, teaming partners, other project stakeholders and the general public and are able to participate in or lead client meetings and hearings.
You will receive minimal direction for most tasks and receive direction on unusual or difficult assignments. Supervision of small project teams.
You will prepare draft scopes of work and budgets for small and mid-size projects and for selected tasks on large projects. You will communicate with senior staff and teaming partners to support environmental analyses and permit compliance.

Who You Are
ESA is currently seeking a highly qualified and experienced mid-level Architectural Historian to manage projects for a growing group of architectural historians within our Southern California Cultural Resources Group. The selected candidate will manage and carry out historic resources work on a wide range of interesting projects throughout the region and practice, and will be part of an interdisciplinary team that includes staff from our Water, Energy, Community Development, Transportation, and Airports practices.
The successful candidate will have excellent writing, time/budget management, and organizational capabilities; agency coordination and client service experience; proficiency in management of historic architectural resources within the context of CEQA; experience preparing MND and EIR sections and developing preservation-related alternatives and mitigation; and expertise in evaluation and treatment of a variety of resource types, including residential, commercial, and water and energy infrastructure. You have a strong understanding of historic resources requirements in the City of Los Angeles.
The ideal candidate holds a graduate degree in architectural history, history, preservation planning, or closely related field and possesses the ability to produce well-written and technically supported historic resources documents and strong problem-solving skills. This position requires an ability to work collaboratively with clients and interdisciplinary teams to deliver projects on time and within budget in a fast-paced work environment. Excellent organizational skills required.
The candidate will demonstrate a clear understanding of project management principles and practices and be responsible for the delivery of high-quality work products. Preference for candidates who have the knowledge and skillset to mentor junior staff members.
