The City of Los Angeles launched the L.A. Lights the Way streetlight design competition. The goal of the design competition is to select a new standard Bureau of Street Lighting (BSL) design that connects with the rich design tradition of the Los Angeles streetlight while also incorporating new requirements related to technology and climate, and making room for text or other artistic elements reflecting community identity. The winning design and its variations will light the streets and sidewalks of Los Angeles.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

  • The winning design will light the streets and sidewalks of Los Angeles
  • Opportunity to win award monies in all categories
  • Chance to design public infrastructure that will live on for generations

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Professional Competition

The City of Los Angeles invites applicants from around the country and the world; residency in the City or County of Los Angeles is not required. Though individual applications are permitted, we encourage the formation of teams that include experts in industrial design, lighting design, and engineering; licensed architects are also encouraged as team members. Successful entries will combine design innovation with practical knowledge about how to see their proposals fabricated and installed.

Professional Student Design Competition

The Professional Student Competition will be open to students enrolled in undergraduate (two- or four-year) or graduate programs at the college or university level, located in Los Angeles County.  The applicant’s educational institution must be listed as an eligible school registered with the L.A. Lights the Way program. This competition will comprise a single stage. There is no entry fee for students.

Student Design Competition

The Student Competition will be open to high school students in schools located within the City of Los Angeles, its departments, boards, commissions, successors, and assigns. The school must be listed as an eligible school that has registered with the LA Light the Way program. There is no entry fee for students.
