What is a Diálogo?
The Latinos and Planning Division(LAP) of the APA, founded in 2007, has worked to spearhead the discourse on justice in the city through an integration of the Latino narrative in the building and planning of communities in the U.S. A primary tool for this effort has been the use of “Diálogos.”
The original purpose behind all the Diálogos was to set a national agenda for planning for Latinos in the U.S. and to become a tool for Latino planners. We have learned that Diálogos are an effective tool to formulate a more authentic planning process, that starts where planning should always start: listening to the needs and aspirations of the people we aim to serve.
Diálogos represent a bottom-up approach that allows the voices of communities to be heard, and intend to bring them to the planning table. Through participatory planning processes Diálogos engage Latinos in an authentic reflection of their actual needs and aspirations, emphasizing their engagement with and contribution to the communities where they live.
